TURNITIN AT DAL

Dalhousie University subscribes to Turnitin.com, a service which allows instructors to check student papers for originality.

Turnitin produces "originality reports" that faculty members may use in determining the originality of submitted work. It scans submitted papers for:

  • Material copied from web sites (live and previous versions)
  • Papers purchased from paper mills
  • Essays or assignments previously or concurrently submitted to Turnitin
  • Published works, including newspapers, journals and magazines                                     - over 6,000 titles are scanned via the InfoTrac Onefile database

Turnitin states "our system promotes fairness and academic integrity, values the privacy and intellectual property of students, and operates within relevant laws." Their policies are explained in their Copyright and Privacy document as well as in their Privacy Pledge. There is also a document that specifically addresses Canadian students and their legal rights.
